About Surico Alpaca
Surico Alpaca is dedicated to breeding quality suri alpaca. It is a family run business involving Brook and Sue Richards, in partnership with their daughter Hermione. We first got involved with alpacas in 1998 purely as a hobby. Since then we have developed it into a successful business. At Surico Alpaca we now have approx 150 suri which we run on a 33 acre block between Tauranga and Rotorua, in the North Island of New Zealand.
Our focus is high quality white suri with the aim to continue improving the breed for lustre, fineness and weight of the fleece, while maintaining excellent conformation. To achieve this we have imported the best genetics from Peru and Australia. We now have world class suri exporting to UK, Europe and Asia.
We were among the first to import and breed suri in NZ and now hold a top position in breeding suri in Australasia. Our elite white suri herd was started in 2000 with the purchase of 5 females originating from Alianza in Peru, 3 were mated to Accoyo males imported by Jill Short in 2000. In the first 3 years we were extremely lucky to have mainly females born and with the import of a few more, we were able to build our herd quickly. These females and their daughters continue to produce excellent progeny.
Within that first year, we were fortunate to acquire part ownership and services of 4 Accoyo males after their brief stay in Australia. Kaihere Accoyo Brilliante, Surilana Parsifal, Surilana Rufino and Surilana Massay Mo, have all had a major influence on the high quality of the New Zealand suri herd. These studs, along with the females have been the cornerstone of our success in breeding and in the show ring.
At Surico we have suri for sale at all levels and occasionally offer some of our best elite females. Surico Yulia was put up for auction at the 2006 NZ National Show and Auction and reached a record price yet to be surpassed. Surico Belle has been selected for the 2009 National Auction of elite alpaca.
At Surico we regularly run Open Days for education and sales. We are more than happy to share our knowledge and expertise on all aspects of alpaca farming, including setting up your property, husbandry and choosing your animals. We can also assist with practical support, such as shearing, when needed. After your purchase from Surico, we keep in contact to help while you become familiar with your alpacas, and we promise on-going assistance. Each year we organise shearing days and training for managing your alpacas.
Agistment is offered, so if you have not yet organised your property, we can look after your alpacas and start your breeding program until you are ready to take delivery. Permanent agistment is also an option.
We are closely associated with NZ Alpacas Ltd and provide a comprehensive mobile mating service using NZ Alpacas top genetics. This service brings a male from the group of unequalled quality studs, to your farm and returns two weeks later for confirmation of pregnancy or remating.
Along side our white herd we have retained some of our original rare coloured suri, which we love to breed as well, this is a smaller operation but we do make sales from this section. It is run in conjunction with NZ Alpacas at Cambridge.
Also in conjunction with Chris and Tasha at NZ Alpacas, we offer for sale, a large selection of female alpacas, both huacaya and suri, with excellent heritage, mated to premium sires. Having the widest choice available, we are confident to offer the best alpacas to suit your situation, having a range of alpacas for sale to suit all budgets from "starter packs" to outstanding breeding stock. Some may even have cria at foot.
We also have young males (wethers to be) who are friendly enough to eat out of your hand. These are ideal for pets or companions for pregnant females.
We welcome farm visits to discuss alpacas and look at them in their farm environment. If you are passing just call in, however, to be sure of finding us home, especially if you are making a special trip, please phone and arrange a visit.
